Superstar DJs tackle housing crash

Paul Oakenfold’s Hollywood mansion is up for sale, press reports in California revealed this week, for the bargain basement rate of US $10million. House hunting website Berg Properties said Oakey’s luxury pied a terre includes a pool, spa, recording studio and gourmet kitchen plus a direct view into the Hollywood Bowl arena, with the added attraction of celeb neighbours John Taylor from Duran Duran and R.E.M.’s Mike Mills (who are presumably less taxing than Tony Blair, his next door neighbour in Paddington, London.)

Whether Oakey plans to move back to his multi-million pound London townhouse remains unclear though British tabloid The Sun claimed this week that the original ‘superstar DJ’ was ‘cheesed off with his current profession’, particularly the implications of digital music. “Downloading is the biggest issue right now,” Oakey told the paper. “The industry has changed and I don’t necessarily like it. I am less and less involved in it,” he complained.

Rival superstar Tiesto, meanwhile, consolidated his status as the world’s number one DJ, agreeing to a charity fashion hook-up with Armani just weeks after revealing he’s an enthusiastic long term believer in the US property market. ”I actually bought a house in Miami about two years ago at Aqua on Allison Island. It’s a more residential area, but it’s also no more than 10 minutes away from all the action,” the Dutch star told the Miami Times. “I see it as an investment for my future and as the perfect place for when I get older.”

Super-rich dance star Moby also re-entered the property market last year, putting his New York penthouse apartment on the market in May for US $7.5milllion. The erstwhile punk rocker paid just US $4.5million for his flat in the El Dorado on Central Park West in 2004, moving in to a building whose residents over the years have included Marilyn Monroe, Faye Dunaway and Bono.
