Long regarded as the yardstick of what’s ‘hot or not’ in the world of music – and let’s be honest, depending on what side of the fence you stand on an NME seal of approval could be enough to turn you off an artist on the spot – the UK indie rag has jumped on the Gameboy/Gamegirl bandwagon, tagging the Melbourne electro-hop 4-piece as “unquestionably the stupidest band you’ll hear this year”.
Although being branded ‘stupid’ would ordinarily fall into the insult category, it turns out it’s praise of the highest order when offered by NME. In the column, written by Alex Hoffman of MTV, Gamegirl/Gameboy received the backhanded compliment for their tracks ‘Fruit Salad’ and ‘Sweaty Wet/Dirty Damp’, even though it was noted “they will never win NME’s Godlike Genius Award”.
