Archetypal ‘superstar DJ’ Norman Cook has told The Sun in the UK he’s “ditching” the Fatboy Slim name for a new identity. However his management seem very keen to point out the Fatboy will roll on. Who to believe?
“Yes, I am ditching the Fatboy Slim name,” Cook told the tabloid, “but I can’t tell you the new one.” While old-time fans might like to interpret this as “I’m over the 250,000-person beach parties, let’s go back to the Big Beat Boutique!” it’s more likely Cook is just stirring the pot. In a statement, the man’s management “categorically” confirmed he’ll be continuing under the iconic nom de plume for his upcoming appearances at Glastonbury, Wireless, Creamfields and, yes, Brighton Beach. However, when Cook himself was pressed on the issue by media, he deflected with, “I’m going to take the Fifth Amendment on that question and not say, because I’ll get myself into trouble.”
Trivia alert: did you know Cook holds the Guinness World Record for the most Top 40 hits under different monikers? In addition to Fatboy Slim, he’s had chart-toppers as Beats International, Freakpower and Pizzaman. This name change could be his chance to hold onto the title…provided the old boy’s still got some hits in him.
