21 year old Institubes producer Surkin chatted to Skrufff this week about both his meteoric rise to top of the dirty electro-pop hierarchy and being a reformed ‘four-to-the-floor hater’: and revealed he remains blissfully unaware of house music’s ageing elite.
Quizzed about Daft Punk manager Pedro Winter’s recent revelation that he set up Ed Banger Records because he was ‘fed up with big name DJs spinning shit music’ the baby faced French star admitted he pays minimal attention to celebrity DJs such as Tiesto, Paul van Dyk and Carl Cox. “Who are those guys?” Surkin queried. “I’ve never heard of them before.”
The precocious producer also agreed with Winter’s assertion that ‘every single French artist is influenced by Daft Punk’, declaring ‘Daft Punk are obviously part of my DNA; their albums are classics.’ “But then; if you play the influence game, you have to realize that everybody is different, coming from different backgrounds, with different inspirations, and most of us started out in rap crews, rock bands or at ballet classes (just ask Bobmo),” he laughed.
Despite his outspokenness, he remained surprising ambivalent, however, when quizzed about the famed rudeness of natives in his adopted home of Paris, refusing to confirm or deny whether Parisians are genuinely more arrogant than anyone else. “Coming from ‘La Province’, if I say yes, Parisians will say I’m biased because of where I’m from,” he explained. “And if I say no, they’ll think I’m such a wannabe Parisian that I wouldn’t dare criticize them. It’s a lose-lose situation, you see,” he mused.
Defining his musical style as simply ‘dance music’ (‘I just make some tracks, I’m too young to have a trademark style to respect and protect’) Surkin said his journey into club music was via ghetto house and was equally enthused about the pop sound of his latest single Next Of Kin. “I’m really glad the new single got good feedback from home-listeners (can you say that?) as well as clubbers and DJs. I was worried it wouldn’t get played because it wasn’t all distorto-tech but it turned out OK on that front,” he admitted.
“I’m happy with what’s happening but it’s still on a small scale, you know, I still can’t afford that pony I’ve been wanting since I’m eight,” he concluded.

Didn't Aoki conveniently not know who Van Dyk and them were too? I hate ALL those suckers. Surkin included. But this little hayseed saying he wasn't sure who they were. Fuck off. You are a little dance music tadpole. I am not you and still know who they are. Pretentious shit. Boot off.

Surkin played one of the best sets I have heard this year at Tank. His production is beyond his years. And fuck anyone who does not rate ed banger, they have some of the best artists out.

Hmmmm, never heard of people like Carl Cox, Paul VanDyk or Tiesto hey? For someone to show this level of arrogance seems pretty relative of his age. It seems knowing it all is global for 21y/olds! Haha. People like Carl Cox (and the others) have produced many great tracks themselves, but are also fantastic DJ's, referring to the comment listed further down this page - ''he's great live - puts ableton through its paces'' Hmmmm, so performing live now means running a laptop using Ableton? And this is what makes a great DJ/performer. Bugger, Im off to Dick Smiths for everything a 2008 DJ needs........ Give me Carl Cox, a couple of 1210's, a few CDJ's and a mixer - lets see who's a better LIVE act!

surkin is amazing for his years. the comment of not knowing who tiesto, cox ect only comes from the people who purely love the clean and often not so clean amazing sounds of french electro and thrash not caring about they trance djs who dj mag claims are the most amazing things in music since forever.. and i for one am over the dj top 100 being made up of trance, techno and minimal dj's... the only reason why people such as the french electro and thrash djs dont make the top 100 is because people into that style of music dont give a shit or care enough to vote.. every monkey jumping on an armin and tiesto train voting when they've heard 3 songs or gone to a white trance party should wake up to themselves cause they think they know music but they dont know shit about the intelligence art and creativity of tracks that people such as ed banger records and others like it make.. keep the music underground.. fuck ibiza - commercial - ministry of sound and every other wannabe along the way.. pretty sure that will piss off a few people but fuck it.. french electro and daft punk all the way. good music is art.
