It’s times like these you wish you were one of Iceland’s 300,000-odd citizens. While roughly half that number of Poms were sprawled across Glastonbury, Icelandic nationals Sigur Ros and Bjork “celebrated nature” with a free open-air concert in Reykjavik.
Saturday night’s small-scale Náttúra festival was staged to draw attention to the impact of Aluminium smelting on Iceland’s ecosystem. Sigur Ros took to the stage under the nocturnal sun (Iceland has nearly unbroken sunlight throughout its summer nights, especially in June), performing songs gleaned mainly from new album Með Suð í Eyrum Við Spilum Endalaust. Bjork even got behind the drum-kit for lead single Gobbledigook, returning later to perform her own hit-laden headline set. We’re sure it was more warm and fuzzy than even the thickest pair of mittens.
