'Really old' Tiesto won't retire

40-something Dutch DJ Tiesto vowed to continue spinning indefinitely this week, in a U-turn increasingly common amongst the world’s (increasingly ageing) top DJs. “I once said that I was going to stop when I’m 40 years old. But that was 10 years ago, when I thought 40
was really old,” Tiesto told the Boston Globe. “A lot of people my age are jealous that I still live like a kid. I go around the world partying all the time. I mean, look at the Rolling Stones. They’re still doing it,” he pointed out.

His views dovetailed neatly with those of still busy Dutch trance icon Ferry Corsten who ten years ago told Skrufff he was similarly considering quitting as he approached his thirtieth birthday. “I have this age in my head of 35 or 39 as being the ideal age to stop DJing,” Ferry mused, “Or perhaps in a couple of years I’ll get sick and tired so much that I’ll quit DJing altogether and go back in the studio to devote myself solely to producing.”

Meanwhile in Ibiza, Manumisssion/Ibiza Rocks chief Andy McKay told Pacha Magazine he believes there’s a ‘generational shift going on’ in club culture at present, suggesting Tiesto and Ferry’s future could be tougher than they imagine. “The next generation doesn’t want to dance to just dance music. They’re not into 30 and 40 somethings dancing to a 50 year old DJ,” said Andy, “The next generation is the ‘Fuck you, Dad!’ generation. Ibiza Rocks is very much part of that,” he added.

I'm 31 and haven't been to Ibiza before and would love to go but perhaps all the Y-gen's won't want to dance next to a '30 something' year old like me :o( But tell me this, what generation WASN'T the 'f**k you dad' generation?

Are Gen Y's and Z's gonna suddenly stop rocking when they hit some magical number like 30 or 40...? I don't think so... So why should they expect us Gen X's to...? Do they think everything is all about them or something? I've worked hard, paid my taxes, I'll do whatever the f**k I want! :)

im sure if you ask any true trance fans they would be all for tiesto not retiring as long as he is still dropping tight choons. It seems to me that it is the superficial, flavour of the month, dance music fans (and i use the word fan loosely) who think that it wouldnt be the "in" thing to do to go rock out to a 40 something DJ. I for one am sick of seeing dance music which was once "all about the music" evolve into dunce music which is "all about the image" dj on tiesto.

I'm very happy that Tiesto has decided not to retire. After seeing him live for the first time this year in Melbourne, then hearing about his retirement I was shattered. Now I actually have another chance to see him again, when he comes back to Australia. PS: Im only 23

As if 40's old...but then I guess you are a 'youth oriented' portal, so I guess you're into the ephemeral. Real DJs last - how old are Carl Craig and Marshall Jefferson these days??

I'm 43 and my other half is 44 and we go to nightclubs and as many dance festivals as we can. We both love dance music and everything that goes with it and we have no problems keeping up with our friends who are 15-20 years younger than us. So good on you Tiesto, Carl, John, Sven, Fatboy. You're as young as you feel.

I'm Gen Y, and I have no problem with dancing next to 30- and 40-something year olds, or to a much older DJ. Go to any festival and you'll see it happening.. Besides, Tiesto has reached godlike status. When he stops sounding amazing, then we'll talk about his retirement.

Age will never matter when your as good as some of these Dj's they should remain immortal as they are the one's who brought this seen to where it is. Its because of them we love it so much.

I'm 38, married with a 9 yr old daughter. I'm a yoga teacher during the week and a dj on the weekends. Djing still brings in most of my income. While the late nights and toxic environment somewhat conflict with my yogic lifestyles I feel the love I share by rocking dancefloors with house music is completely soul nourishing. I don't feel any of the youngsters I play to give a damn how old I am, aslong as I deliver what they come to expect from a good dj. Keep it real at whatever age I say (although my wish is for a boon on daytime parties!)

Trance/Progressive is, and always will be about the music, nothing will change that. The young "Dance Fans" will get bored of it sooner or later, latch onto another genre and leave us ravers to party hard in our retirement homes. As long as Tiesto is cranking good tunes, I will rave. P.S I don't mind seeing 'oldies' in the nightclubs, there is this older woman who frequents Rise... what a champ.

When music is your calling and you're one of the hottest in the game, why retire? Jay-Z has been retiring for years and has released 2 album since announcing his retirement. If Tiesto was a real prick about this he'd claim retirement, lay low for a while and then press another album at double the price. Keep spinning Tiesto, we loving what you do.

Good on Tiesto, he keeps on keepin' on, however compared with the DJ's on the Northern Soul scene he is a bit of a youngster, as the average here is well over 50 and often approaching 60. The Northern Soul DJ's all play vinyl 45's on Technics SL1200 MK2 decks and the average age of the records would be 40 years . All the best DJ Snowy (Melbourne)
