Paul Oakenfold stepped up promotion for his forthcoming 26 date residency at Las Vegas superclub Rain this week, labelling himself the Captain Kirk of contemporary dance culture. “The night is called Planet Perfecto and the DJ booth is the control tower, the Starship Enterprise,” Oakey enthused. “And musically we go to different worlds.” The LA based Brit said he’s recruited Pink Floyd and Gwen Stefani production people for his one year, 26 date mission adding, “I want to make it a big show like all the big singers have done. It’s not just a DJ set.”
Big singers he’ll be competing with include Elton John and Cher (currently at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace) and wildcard duo Donny and Marie (Osmond) who take over the legendary Flamingo showroom from September 9, though Rain’s adverts stress Oakey’s really competing with New York and LA. “There is nowhere in America other than Las Vegas that I would want to be a resident DJ,” he says on a full page advert in Pacha’s latest Ibiza magazine. “It is the world’s oyster, and the Perfecto nights at Rain are going to take clubbing to a whole new level.”
What kind of clubbers will be able to experience the ‘new level’ remains unclear, though those wearing ‘athletic wear, shorts, tennis shoes, baseball caps and flip flops’ will be banned under Rain’s ‘stylish nightwear’ dress code. Wealthy clubbers will also be welcomed, with a choice of ‘cabana level’ booths, six ‘sky boxes’ and eight ‘sensuous’ ‘water booths’ available by reservation. “This will be the most extravagant nightlife experience Las Vegas has ever seen,” venue Group Vice President Michael Fuller promised, in a press release issued last week. “It will include everything from video and audio entertainment to performance artists and props.”
Perfecto Las Vegas opens on Saturday August 30.
