A new study of 30,000 music fans has revealed a close correlation between musical tastes and personality traits, with dance music fans the moodiest of all. Study chief Professor Adrian North of Heriot Watt University suggested dance music fans are as extrovert as rap fans ‘but are more likely to be unfriendly and slightly self-centred’ and similar to rock & roll fans in being ‘not kind or generous’ (Independent).
Heavy rockers, however, possess numerous qualities to classical music buffs, the Professor declared, both being ‘creative and at ease but not outgoing.’ “The general public has held a stereotype of heavy metal fans being suicidally depressed and of being a danger to themselves and society in general,” Professor North told the BBC. “But they are quite delicate things.”
Notable dance figures who appear to be exceptions to the rule include German techno star Chris Liebing who, chatting to Skrufff several years ago, admitted being a passionate heavy metal fanatic. “I used to listen to hard rock and heavy metal when I was really young and I believe the energy of the music is often similar to techno, even if the BPMs are different,” said Chris.
Uber-successful Belgium band Soulwax also owned up to still happily playing Slayer in their DJ sets in an interview with the Guardian recently, less than a year after admitting they’re ‘obsessed’ with AC/DC. “There’s no band in the world like them,” Soulwax’s Stephen Dewaele told 3D World. “They don’t get enough credit sometimes. They’ve been hugely influential on modern music,” he enthused.
