Gearing up for the 2008 Parklife tour, Stephen Dewaele of Belgian four-piece Soulwax (and one half of 2manydjs with his brother David) spoke with inthemix last week and as they have a habit of doing once again reaffirmed the band’s love for grizzled Aussie rock band AC/DC. Currently preparing for the release of their first album in 8 years, Black Ice, AC/DC have a worldwide tour on the cards it’s only natural they had the feelers out for potential sponsors. Soulwax were only too happy to oblige… unwittingly of course.
“We heard a really cool story, and I don’t even know if I should tell you, [it’s from] somebody at their record company in the UK who is a friend of ours.” Stephan laughed, albeit with some trepidation. “Apparently Smirnoff were approached to sponsor their tour or something. [They] thought AC/DC weren’t cool enough, and said ‘no, we’re not gonna do it’. And then the guy from Smirnoff read an article in The Guardian where we praised AC/DC and said they were the coolest thing ever. We always go on an AC/DC rant… the guy from Smirnoff read it and then decided to do it!”
If only securing sponsorship dollars were that easy for all of Soulwax’s friends. “We could go on for hours about AC/DC,” Stephen gushed. “I think they are probably the most valid rock band ever. It’s not a secret, [what they do] seems so simple but it’s not.” Perhaps a cheeky Soulwax bootleg of the new AC/DC single Rock N Roll Train will make it into their Parklife sets?
