Culture Club singer Boy George announced he’s switching priorities from DJing to singing this week with a typically outspoken attack on contemporary club culture. “Being a DJ felt fresh (when I started), there was a punk aspect to dance music which was how it was when I first started singing,” he told Portsmouth Today. “But it’s the other way round now. It’s not hip, not underground any more. It’s music for the masses. Now dance music has gone the way pop music went – formulaic rubbish,” said George.
Chatting to the Wolverhampton Express & Star, meanwhile, he was less hyper-critical than usual, instead chatting candidly about his drug habits (‘I was going around in circles like it was groundhog day’) and life philosophy. “There are two statements which define me,” George declared. “The first is that bitterness is like taking poison and expecting someone else to die. The other is ‘Remember you’re a Womble’,” he advised.
George’s wombling free musings came just weeks after definitive formulaic rubbish British pop star Will Young hinted at a future career in clubland, telling Digital Spy he dreams of making a double disc ambient and ‘upbeat house’ album. “I think I’m going to put it out next summer and it’ll be interesting to see how people react,” the Pop Idol winner revealed. “I’m not afraid of trying different things, but I am slightly wary because people will say, ‘Who does he think he is?’”
