Sasha talks Tiesto and digital downloads

As one of the world’s first definitive superstar DJs, Sasha is eminently qualified to discuss the mechanics of success, though he admits he’s nonplussed by the man who today strides the DJ world as its most definitive example; Tiesto. “To be honest, it’s beyond me. I don’t know. But he’s a ticket-selling machine; a total phenomenon. It’s crazy,” Sasha told Skrufff recently when talking about his new album Invol2ver. “I don’t know if he fits any of the standard pop star criteria at all, I don’t think he does, actually,” Sasha mused when quizzed on Tiesto’s pop star potential. “Though maybe in Holland he does. But he can sell tickets at a drop of a hat. It’s amazing.”

Sasha’s own path to success remains intricately connected to his trademark journey style approach to building sets, a strategy he admits involves more than a little forward thinking. “It involves a hell of a lot of planning, actually,” he says. “That’s the whole thing with the digital side of music too,” he adds. “The preparation that goes into sourcing the music, going through it all, getting it all warped and ready into the computer and organising it, you have to do all that and more before a gig. Then all that preparation allows you to be spontaneous when you go into the club.”

“Then when I’m there, I get a feel from the what the warm up DJ is doing, where I’m going to start, how to start,” he continued. “Though of course, the whole journey thing depends very much on where you’re playing. If it’s a festival and you’ve only got an hour to play there’s no point, but if you have two or three hours than you can work with that. Of course it’s important; that’s what I’ve built my name on. That’s what most DJs try to achieve; to take people somewhere for those two or three hours, rather than just playing mindless record after record, after record.”

Sasha tours Australia in November as part of Global Gathering. For all the latest on the festival check out inthemix.com.au/globalgathering, with interviews, news updates, DJ mixes, videos and heaps more!

There is no point paying top dollar to listen to Sasha for less than a couple of hours. I can list 3 or 4 of his sets that are the best I have ever heard, none les than 2 hours....... Get him in a decent club, nobody knows how to structure a festival anyway!

Mark James, you do realise how many people will be pissed off if you give Sasha less than 2hrs for his set? it would be a travesty and an embarrassment to give a man as grand as he is a typical 1.5hr set. than again if you just gave us a sideshow, people will be lining up on your doorstep to praise you.

to be honest, I don't think he'll get any more than the standard 1 hour set for GG, but.. he should have a sideshow similar to Digweed's - 4 hours!!!!!!! blllllisssssss
