Lily Allen strip-searched in Dubai

English pop star Lily Allen laughed off being strip-searched by Dubai customs recently, telling the Mail On Sunday, “I knew I didn’t have anything on me so I wasn’t worried. I wasn’t paranoid, just terrified.” Supermodel Agyness Deyn and hard-living Welsh actor Rhys Ifans were also examined as they flew into UAE for a party to launch Dubai’s luxury Atlantis Hotel, with Ifans reportedly ‘quivering like jelly as the officers approached him’.

“They made him strip bare and poked him about with plastic gloves,” an unnamed ‘travel companion’ told the Mail. “He had to hold his private parts out of the way while an officer did a thorough inspection. After nearly two hours of being interrogated and molested he was told to put his clothes back on and go on his way. He was very scared and at one point was close to tears as he honestly thought he was going to be banged up,” they added.

Magazine editor Oliver Guy-Watkins was similarly pulled over in Dubai a week previously and described being detained for over an hour after customs officials discovered a speck of tobacco in his case. “I quickly found myself in a very small metal room with the clothes I was wearing on the floor. They brought in my hold bag, and began to take everything out. At the bottom they discovered two tiny balls of mud,” he recalled, writing after the event on Big Shot. ‘See hash, I knew,’ said the little man, as another larger guy arrived.”

Grooverider has also spoken further about his experiences being arrested in Dubai last December, saying he was initially told he was being sent back to the UK after airport staff found a couple of grams of hash in his luggage. “I was held on remand until Christmas Day and that was when I was sentenced to four years,” the drum & bass star told the Birmingham Mail. “It was a big shock, but I dealt with it and just tried to get through it as best as I could. I had fellow inmates with me from the UK and the US and Australia so it was OK,” he said.

Such a shame that a talented, innovative artist like that would be subject to what seems like such a brutal process. Shame, UAE. Shame.
