Superstar DJ jocks like Tiesto will be immune to the declining economic conditions around the world, but all the other DJs down the food chain are in for a pummeling. That’s what’s in store according to Pacha New York owners Eddie Dean and Rob Fernandez at least, who celebrated the Manhattan superclub’s third birthday this week, noting that the credit crunch is having an uneven impact on superstar DJ fortunes.
“For the really big DJs, it makes them more valuable because you know if you have someone like a Tiesto, it’s a sure thing that people are willing to pay more for these guys,” Rob told BlackBoogmag.com columnist Steven Lewis. “So it seems like their prices aren’t going down.” Eddie Dean agreed, confirming ‘“There are certain DJs that have earned a level of respect, and they kind of still name their price. But everyone else, they’re just hoping that you’re going to book them again,” he added.
Their assessment is likely to disappoint LCD Soundsystem star James Murphy who recently slated rival big name DJs in a typically blunt tirade in Mixmag. “Cull the herd,” the American punk-funk uber-producer stormed, “Make a bunch of superstar DJs lose their income stream. Thin the pack; eat the straggling deer.”
