Next weekend, legendary London club The End will close its doors for good – but not before it throws the mother of all farewell parties. Kicking off at 8pm on Saturday 24 January and finishing some time in the following 36 hours, ‘The End Of The End’ brings together a bunch of DJs who’ve worked that dancefloor countless times. Revered for his mammoth sessions in the island DJ booth, Laurent Garnier will grace the decks for the last time. He’s joined by residents Layo & Bushwacka! and Mr C, plus club regulars Ben Watt, Erol Alkan, Jimpster, Will Saul, Rory Phillips, Don Mac and Frankie Valentine.
On any ‘regular’ night, The End heaves until the wee hours, so it’s fair to say the closing shindig will be a roadblock. To go out in true democratic fashion, there’ll be no presales, which means some pretty heavy queuing. However, the club website promises: “We have obtained a licence to close West Central Street to traffic, and will be covering the queues with a marquee, there will be a silent disco, and we will be providing drinks and other entertainment.”
Throughout its 14-year history, The End has been a bastion of eclectic programming and forward-thinking line-ups. It has not yet been revealed what the new owners will do with the space, or whether the team behind The End will take its formula elsewhere. Next weekend, however, will be a fittingly epic send-off. In the words of the organisers: “This party will go on and on and on…”
