Having launched last year to much fanfare (and controversy, not surprisingly), the 2009 Beatport Music Awards have returned with nominees revealed overnight. Aside from some of the more questionable genre/artist classifications, the full list of acts up for awards does encompass a large part of music that made a difference in 2008. This should come as no surprise, however, as Beatport select the nominees based on sales through their store. “To keep the awards fair and relevant to the whole electronic music scene,” they wrote on the Beatportal blog. “The nominees were chosen based solely on unit sales on Beatport during 2008 and are broken down into separate genre categories.”

Last year’s golden boy Deadmau5 – who won four awards overall – is once again nominated several times, however notable by its absence is the most controversial of trophies he walked away with; Most Influential, Forward-thinking and Relevant Person in Electronic Music. It seems the award has been dropped from proceedings entirely. Australian artists making an appearance in the nominees list include Dirty South: Best Electro House, Bag Raiders: Best Indie Dance/Nu Disco and Jaytech: Best Progressive House. Voting is open to the public, so if you’d like to let them know who you feel made the biggest difference head on over to Beatport.

Such an atrocious list. You can tell some database query came up with it rather than a bunch of informed individuals.

format:b for techno category Johnny D for tech house Dousk and Jaytech for prog but can see Jerome Isma-Ae getting this one

its a list of what sold the best not what the best is or who the best artist is. imo its a pathetic list formulated by a computer.

but even if you had a peoples choice category, all these names would be up there, and their are some great producers in these categories, like Kone said the techno category will be hard to split, Format b and paul ritch had a great year this year

Really disappointed that Elite Force has been looked over once again. Wolfgang Gartner for Electro House for me. That guy is fantastic. A bit perplexed by Boards of Canada earning a nom for Chillout, last release was in 2006! Really hard for me to choose

I didn't realise some of these tracks were that popular, I might have to remove them from my cd folder now!

As much as I love beatport, they have serious issues with catergorising their music. Could not agree more with Tiger Stripes being in there for best Tech House artist. Kone I agree, i'm finding it hard to choose between Control

Yeah my little lady birds by Giash and Til Yali is definitely a killer minimal track. I'm kinda surprised that Richard Dinsdale isn't up there anywhere, my vote would be going to him if he was.
