Having been on a near two decade break between albums, reports are surfacing that iconic new wavers Devo are getting ready to record a new album. We think that’s pretty cool in itself, but where this story really gets interesting is with the star-studded list of possible producers and collaborators that might hook up with the kitsch kings.
Speaking to the LA Times, Devo frontman Mark Mothersbaugh said that despite internet speculation, LCD Soundsystem’s main-man, James Murphy, would not be producing the entire record, but was definitely interested in working with the band. “Gerald [Casale, bass] had said we were searching for people like James to work with, which somehow turned into him helming the entire album. When we contacted him to apologize for the misunderstanding, he said he’d love to work with us,” Mothersbaugh explained.
The pairing of Murphy and Devo is a mouth-watering one when we think of stunning white-boy disco sensibilities that the DFA maestro could bring to the partnership. But that collaboration is not the only one that’s on the horizon, as Mothersbaugh also drops hints about Devo recruiting French favourites Justice and Norman Cooke – aka Fatboy Silm – for the record. “We played a Japanese festival recently between Justice and Fatboy Slim, both of whom said they’d like to work with us too…[we are] looking for some outside mixers and producers that might want to have fun with a Devo song.”
While we’re on the trend of recruiting such A-listers for a Devo reboot, let’s get a Tiesto remix of Whip It done!
