You know what? It must be pretty great to be Steve Aoki. Yeah sure, he’s a pretty trashy DJ, and we don’t really care for the glam-centric LA roost which he rules, but really, Steve Aoki has it good. I mean look at him! He’s some kind of hipster messiah, he runs his own record label ( Dim Mak – the home to MSTRKRFT, Bloody Beetroots, SPA), and he has the clout to hook up collaborations with some of the biggest artists in the game.
When got the low-down from The Bloody Beetroots’ Bob Rifo that he and Aoki were working on a hardcore punk project under the name of Rifoki – full story here -, we put on our investigative hats to see what else Aoki is up to, and we learned that the Dim Mak supremo has a score of projects in the works with some other superstars. On the list, Aoki is working with the one and only Armand Van Helden on a single by the name of Brrrap, he’s got a full EP together with Laidback Luke, a collaboration with former Daft Punk vocalist Romanthony called Dead Meat, an EP with club demon D.I.M., an EP under the moniker of Colossus with Boys Noize and The Faint, as well as an upcoming single with the mysterious Zuper Blahq called I’m In The House.
Some extra digging revealed that Zuper Blahq is indeed the Perez-punching Black Eyed Peas frontman, will.i.am, who’s developed a passion for electro. We’ve since heard the track, and it is spectacularly terrible.
And when you add to that jaw-dropping list Aoki’s previous remix work for the likes of The Killers, N.A.S.A., Peaches and Joachim Gerraud, it’s clear that he’s got some good hook-ups. Even if all of those productions end up bombing (which is a distinct possibility), we’ve got to admit we’re actually impressed by how damn connected Steve Aoki is…
Do you reckon if we closed all our sets with Bohemian Rhapsody, we’d get to work with Armand too?
