Beginning nearly 15 years ago on seminal German imprint !K7, the DJ-Kicks series has an impeccable reputation amongst dance music circles for its commitment to quality and consistent track record of stellar releases. Over the years heavyweights of the scene such as Carl Craig, Nightmares On Wax, Hot Chip, Booka Shade and Tiga have all contributed mixes to the eclectic series, and now we know who’s next in line; Canadian retro-funkers Chromeo!
A highlight from this year’s Good Vibrations festival, Chromeo have been quiet on studio work since the release of their glorious sophomore LP Fancy Footwork, so it’s a joy to finally get something new from the duo of Dave1 and P-Thug.
While we don’t have an official tracklisting for Chromeo’s DJ-Kicks just yet, Data Transmission is reporting that the mix will contain choice cuts from the modern producers like Lifelike and Chateau Marmont as well golden oldies from The Alan Parsons Project and um, Leo Sayer.
In true DJ-Kicks tradition, Chromeo have included an exclusive track in their DJ mix, this one being a talk-box loving cover of The Eagles’ I Can’t Tell You Why, which you can grab for free at the DJ-Kicks web page. Vocoders for the win!
Check out Chromeo’s ‘80s homage Tenderoni in the clip below and stay tuned for more info on their DJ-Kicks release!
