It’s hard to believe that it’s been six and a half years since the now iconic French label, Ed Banger, began. That means it’s been nearly five years since Justice’s Waters Of Nazareth dropped and the Ed Banger sound took a stranglehold on international electro music. But indeed it has been that long, and Ed Banger is still on top of its game. When ITM caught up with the main behind the label’s success, Pedro Winter aka Busy P, ahead of his stint as Parklife DJ and host, we quizzed the Frenchman on the label’s success so far and where he wants to take Ed Banger next.
“There is still a lot that we need to prove with Ed Banger and I already know where it will be going next,” Busy P told us in his typically thick French accent. “A lot of our artists haven’t released their albums yet, like SebastiAn, Mr. Flash and Uffie, so we still have to put those ones out. But I also want to bring out a new style on the label. Ed Banger is not only about noisy electro and crazy disco like Justice…I want to prove that Ed Banger can be something else as well,” he said.
It would seem as though Busy P is already searching for the next big thing on Ed Banger, as in between searching for a rock band for the label he has added buzzed-about French producer Breakbot to Ed Banger’s ever expanding roster of artists. “We just signed a new artist to Ed Banger, Breakbot, who I’m sure a lot of Australian fans already know. I’m really happy to have Breakbot on Ed Banger,” he enthused. “He has a very smooth sound and I really want to push his music on Ed Banger.”
With the skewed sounds of Breakbot due to drop on Ed Banger in September and plans to add a rock band to Ed Banger already in the works, Busy P explained that he sees his label enduring for years to come.
“With a lot of labels closing down at the moment, I think it is a big thing to have been around for six years. When I began Ed Banger I never thought that we would last that long. But now I look at a label like Warp, and how they have been here for 20 years now. I’m influenced by that.”
