The ever-popular Barack Obama certainly won’t be gaining many young fans with his hard-line approach to music downloading laws. The Obama administration has given its thumbs up to a ruling that will see a Minnesota Grandma pay the RIAA (Recording Industry Association Of America ) over $1.9 Million in damages.

Wired reports that the ruling, which was made against Minnesota Grandmother Jammie Thomas-Rasset by a jury, has been supported by the US Federal Justice Department. They sent a 26-page brief to U.S. District Judge Michael Davis, who is presiding over the appeal case, stating that the verdict was not excessive.

The brief argues that, “Congress took into account the need to deter the millions of users of new media from infringing copyrights in an environment where many violators believe that they will go unnoticed.”

The original case made headlines after Thomas-Rasset was charged the insurmountable sum for a mere 24 downloads from file-sharing site Kazaa in 2007 – equating to $80 000 per song.

The defense attorneys are currently examining their options for the struggle ahead, meanwhile we’re wiping our hard drives.
