The DJ community has lost one of its more high-profile members, with the distressing announcement today that Los Angeles DJ and club mogul DJ AM has been found dead.

According to various news outlets the high-flying DJ AM (aka Adam Goldstein away from the decks) was confirmed dead when paramedics were called to the DJ’s New York City apartment. Early reports indicate that Goldstein may have died from a drug overdose, as officials identified several bottles of prescription pills as well as a crack pipe in the DJ’s residence, the Associated Press reported.

Goldstein’s suspected drug overdose has come as a shock to various friends and colleagues, as the DJ had reportedly kicked his past addictions to substances such as crack, ecstasy and cocaine.

What is even more disturbing is that the news of the DJ’s apparent overdose comes nearly one year after he and frequent collaborator Travis Barker miraculously survived a plane crash in South Carolina which claimed the lives of all on board, besides their own.

After recovering from the horrific accident Goldstein appeared to be in optimistic spirits, the Los Angeles Times reports.

“There’s no reason why I should have lived or why I lived and they didn’t,” Goldstein said following the plane crash. “I’m alive and I’m here and I have another chance. So I have to do something better with my life this time.”

As DJ AM, Goldstein worked with the likes of Steve Aoki, Good Charlotte, Eli Escobar and his former band Crazy Town, as well as lasting contributions to the US club scene and the upcoming DJ Hero game. He will undoubtedly be missed.
