Like pretty much everybody else with two dancing feet and one nostalgic heart, we here at ITM absolutely adored LCD Soundsystem’s stellar Sound Of Silver record from 2006. That’s why it was so difficult to endure all the drama from LCD mainman James Murphy, who said back in 2008 that the project was on indefinite hold. Yet after turning a creative corner this year, we leapt with joy to find that Murphy had revived the LCD Soundystem moniker and would be getting to work on a new record. Imagine how high our spirits were this morning when we found out some more tasty news on what to expect from the band’s next offering.
According to US hipster destination FACT, the DFA don recently spoke out to UK Dad-rock bible Mojo about the new album, saying that he and his rag-tag group of band members have left DFA HQ (aka New York City) to record under the sun in Los Angeles.
“We’ve been recording in a mansion; It sleeps 10 and there’s an amazing pool and it felt pretty amazing,” the punk-funk forefather explained, clearly feeling pretty ‘amazing’ about being out of his presumably cluttered Brooklyn loft.
“We decided, let’s make Los Angeles an imaginary Los Angeles of the soul from 1973,” Murphy said of the band’s relocation. “Everyone had to wear white all the time, so it’s like some sort of creepy fucking cult and we’d go to parties, 10 people in a mini-van all in white, and we’d have enough of an impact on how Los Angels operated. You leave a dent.”
With Murphy’s beloved New York forming such a dramatic influence on the past two LCD Soundsystem albums, it’ll be interesting to hear how the decampment to LA has changed the classic LCD sound that we’ve come to know and love. We’ll have to wait a little longer to find out just what the album (slated for a February release) will sound like, as Murphy explained the songs are just “sprawling instrumentals” at this stage.
“I’m working on a song called Why Do You Hate Music?. Everyone seems to hate music right now, even people who make music. There’s a song called Love In LA, which has an Eddy Grant, Sly & Robbie feel,” Murphy said of the album’s initial tracks. “I’m doing what I set out to do on Sound of Silver, which is take more chances.”
With Murphy locked in for some exclusive LCD Soundsystem DJ sets over New Year’s you can rest assured we’ll be persistent in getting some more details from the enigmatic producer when we can, so stay tuned!
