We had to know this was coming. In the wake of Michael Jackson’s untimely death at the age of 50, out trot a whole manner of posthumous releases from his record label, treading that tightrope-thin line between desperate cash-grab and tribute, most of them ending up in the former camp. We’ve already seen the pretty superfluous Stripped Mixes which pared back the lush Motown instrumentation on the Jackson 5 back catalogue to bring MJ’s voice to the forefront and now the latest post-death release is the Michael Jackson Remix Suite, a collection of five packages containing newly produced remixes from the King Of Pop’s discography.
The remix packs are dropping at online retailers every two weeks, with the first remix suite already bouncing out last month with reworks from hip-hop producers like The Neptunes, Ryan Leslie and Swizz Beats and the latest batch is set to hit digital shelves tomorrow. Universal Motown has clearly spared no expense on the mixes, enlisting some damn impressive names for the collection, with Suite II featuring fresh takes from the likes of Paul Oakenfold, Dimitri From Paris, David Morales, Steve Aoki and house mastermind Frankie Knuckles.
“In my opinion, Michael Jackson was the single greatest recording artist and performer of our time. To have the opportunity to work with MJ in any capacity as a producer is nothing short of working with a God,” Frankie Knuckles said of the project. “To be able to study MJ’s visions up close and personal and be a part of the magic is nothing short of bringing my life and career full circle.”
We’re a little undecided about the mixes so far. Whilst we (for the most part) admire the selection of remixing talent on board as well as their clear reverence to the MJ himself, it’s hard to see this collection as much more than a money spinner, especially considering that five different Remix Suites seems a little excessive since they’re only working with Jackson’s pre-Epic material.
The Michael Jackson Remix Suites are released digitally every fortnight, so stay tuned for news on which other famous dance producers will get to mix-up the King Of Pop. In the meantime, check out Frankie Knuckles’ classic take on Rock With You in the clip below.
