Following on from his exploits with last year’s kinda-bonkers side-project The BPA, fans have been gagging for Norman Cook to get back to his bread and butter with a new Fatboy Slim record. Well, keep holding your breath folks, as Cook has announced his next project will be another high-concept offshoot from Fatboy Slim that sees the producer team up with a host of collaborators to record Here Lies Love, an album profiling the former First Lady of the Philippines, Imelda Marcos.

Whilst it’s definitely a head-scratching move for Cook, the concept does indeed sound pretty intriguing, with the producer explaining that Here Lies Love is “a story-telling thing, like Evita, but coming at it from a different angle in that it tells the untold story that people didn’t know about Imelda Marcos.”

That’s good to know, because our familiarity with Phillipines history isn’t too flash, and a quick wiki search for the Marcos dynasty reveals that Imelda and her husband, former president Ferdinand Marcos, were charged with draining the island nation’s wealth from 1968-1986, with the First Lady amassing a collection of over 1200 pairs of shoes. Should be a suitably odd album!

Thankfully, it would see as though Cook is in good company on the record, enlisting plenty of big name guests to add some extra flair to proceedings. According to the NME we’ll hear Santigold, Cyndi Lauper, Martha Wainwright and Talking Heads legend David Byrne on the album, the latter of whom concieved the record with Cook.

“Each track is sung by a different singer and there’s some very interesting guests on there,” Cook said before explaining that the album would also reflect “what was going on in Studio 54, rather than what went on in the Phillipines.”

We’re definitely confused, but also intrigued to see if this will be the oddball musical delight that it sounds like. While we wait for the album, check out the clip below for a sneak peek at Norman Cook’s subject matter.
