ITM presents... When Artists Jump The Shark

Nothing lasts forever, whether it be life in general, boneheaded Vegemite spin-offs or just that carton of milk that’s been sitting in the fridge for three weeks. And nowhere is that cliche truer than in the music industry. Despite more music than ever seeing the light of day, things can turn ugly in the blink of an eye.

Yet somehow, it’s that very moments when the death knell sounds for an artist, the moment they jump the shark and things change for the worse – to borrow a pop culture term from the land of the small screen – that are strangely hypnotic to music fans. In recognition if that, here at ITM we’ve been glued to our grubby computer screens all day, thinking back to the turning points in many artists’ careers when they jumped the shark and began their steep decline into a credibility-devoid hell.

Some are worse than others, indeed a few names have seemingly bounced back and cheated critical suicide, but all have experienced a sharp dip following their shark jumping activities.

So if you’re curious to find out when some of the bigger names in dance music officially lost the plot – or just want to know how we pinpointed the beginning of the end for David Guetta – then check out our Snap! gallery below!

It's a shame David Guetta didn't just get eaten instead... Admittedly the shark was probably trying not to be disrepectful.

Pretty good list. Muscles and EotS never really had any cred to begin with but they can be given a pass for the Justice mention. Top stuff!

I'm still dreaming of a breakbeat comeback :(

How the fuck didn't Bob Sinclar make it? He used to be so fucking good and now he is a narcissistic, money-grubbing douche. This was one of the worst Snap efforts I've seen.

In the mix jumped the shark with this train spotting bunch of crap. What a smug bunch of sh!t. No wonder artists struggle to find an identity with trolls like this scrutinising every move. Pendulum's second album blew my mind. Forget about the live show,

having given the nod to the Fedde Le Grand butchering of Praise You, i think Fatboy Slim could be on the list too... his old big beat stuff was the shiz.

Glad breakbeats gone! Loved it at the time, but it was going no where, and the new school stuff was for the losers who are now into electro!

I'm still entirely flabbergasted on how David Guetta got to number 3.

This is fucking junk - ITM holds a lot of power influencing what people read and think about dance music. Perhaps providing some more constructive and positive material could be encouraged to let the readers make up their own minds.

This article 'jumps the shark'. Who are these artists losing credability with? Some over-opinioniated, un-talented dweeb? Fail.

Breakbeat // Who can tell when breakbeat jumped the shark? Here at ITM we%u2019d say it was in %u201806 when most of the big producers deserted the scene like it had leprosy. The %u2018heads are still dreaming of a comeback%u2026 18 of 22 You obvi

didn't seem the case when i saw Pendulum in Europe... they go psycho for them there! i heart their 2nd album anyway :)

Well and truly agree with the Breakbeat. 06 definately the time that producers veered into 4/4 land and the releases became saturated with bootlegs *spew*

lanesra23

Pendulum do belong in this list. I'm a fan of their recordings and their live show but even they admitted their 2nd effort was a bit off. They have vowed to pick things up but they have to prove it first.

Dubz

Dubz said on the 30th Oct, 2009

I love how people posting here have no knowledge of music...or at least that's the only conclusion I can draw from the squeals of outrage. For the record, David Guetta is to dance music what boiling oil is to ice caps.
