It’s the song that’s been on repeat since A-Trak brought the party to the Parklife faithful, and more recently the tune that’s stormed up the ARIA club charts to the #1 spot; Duck Sauce’s aNYway. We’ve been buzzing about the Duck Sauce project for months now, praising the inspired pairing of Good Vibrations stalwart Armand Van Helden and versatile New Yorker A-Trak, and when ITM had the chance to chat to Trizzy himself about the project a couple of weeks ago, we couldn’t help but press the Fool’s Gold boss for details on the project, probing for the origins of the collaboration, and if we’d see more material than the already circulating Greatest Hits EP.
“Armand is a living legend,” A-Trak gushed down a crackling phone line. “But he’s also a good friend of mine, and we were friends for a while before the idea of making something together even came up. Because of that friendship, there was no ice to break on the songs. We just came to it comfortably and it was a breeze. We had fun doing them.”
Perhaps the most striking thing about the project is the duo’s refreshing resurrection of disco-heavy funky house, and A-Trak told ITM that the direction of the project was a reaction of sorts to the hard hitting electro wave of recent years.
“I had wanted to do a French touch, disco loops project for a couple of years and it seemed like the perfect time to do it because I felt that the whole hard electro scene was beginning to run its course and had already beaten everybody’s ears in,” he said. “This is really a return to music, and something with more grooves.”
As to whether or not we’ll see more material coming from the Duck Sauce camp, A-Trak confirmed that he and Van Helden have more magic up their sleeves, making many a fanboy roll over in glee. “We made the four tracks on the EP back in March, mainly for our DJ friends, thinking they’d be excited to play some stuff like that, and we’ve just let it bubble since then,” he explained. “We’ll probably go back into the studio soon and work on some more stuff for Duck Sauce, and I think it’ll be even easier because now we know what works and what doesn’t. We don’t want to put any pressure on ourselves to do it just yet, but I think we’ll both get the bug to get together and do some more tracks pretty soon.”
