Calvin Harris causes a fruity frenzy with X-Factor stage invasion

For all the shared cultural heritage between Australia and Britain – we still call French fries ‘chips’, we both enjoy humdrum BBC cop dramas, and they brought white settlement to Australia after all – there’s still a part of us that thinks we’ll never truly understand those crazy Brits. Case in point; X-Factor. Whilst Australian Idol is looking more and more like a glorified karaoke competition as the days roll on, UK sensation X-Factor has seemingly found an entirely new barrel to scrape the bottom of, unearthing some very dubious ‘talent’ over the years. Not to mention they’ve been giving judge Dannii Minogue steady work, a clear indication of the show’s affiliation with the dark arts.

Thankfully though, Calvin Harris has had all he can stomach of X-Factor and invaded the reality contest’s stage over the weekend, causing something of an uproar on live TV.

As reported by a thousand breathless UK news outlets shocked by the dance star’s apparent indignity towards the show, Calvin Harris interrupted a live broadcast on X-Factor over the weekend, invading the stage during a performance from contestants John And Edward (or Jedward as they’ve apparently been dubbed in the UK, groan), brandishing a pineapple on his head in jest of the boy-pop duo’s oversized quiffs.

Because X-Factor is evidently some kind of sacred cow in the UK, industry and media figures have been kicking up a stink about Harris’ stage crashing ways, with X-Factor judge and all ‘round sour puss Simon Cowell labelling the upcoming Big Day Out visitor an ‘idiot’, . Burn, dude!

Clearly unfazed by the scrutiny around his antics, Harris was proudly beaming following his ejection and ‘ban’ from X-Factor, explaining to British radio that he wanted to make a ‘mockery’ of the show.

“I was backstage. I was waiting to go on and I was listening to everyone taking it incredibly seriously. I was just inspired to make a mockery of the show. Because it is a music competition, it is a joke and I think it should be treated as such,” Harris said. “I wanted to go out there and make an idiot of myself and sort of just bring the whole show into another kind of area in which it’s treated as kind of a joke.”

A brief snippet of the incident has made its way onto YouTube and you can check the footage of it below. Meanwhile, we’ll be off preparing to give Calvin a heroes welcome when he arrives for the Big Day Out tour in January.
