Kicking today off on a borderline insane note, news has emerged that an American gamer with a lot of time on his hands, Erik Estavillo, has filed a lawsuit against Martin Gore, the songwriting force behind legendery electronic group Depeche Mode. No, seriously.
The claim against Gore stems from a similarly bizarre lawsuit, in which Estavillo is suing video game titans Activision Blizzard over their hugely popular World Of Warcraft franchise, claiming that the MMORPG maintains a “harmful virtual environment” with “sneaky and deceitful practices” which have attributed to his mental health and alienation issues.
As reported by gaming gurus GameSpot, Estavillo also charges the game with maintaining an unreasonably priced subscription fee ($14.99 USD per month) and other multitude of costs, causing him to develop “depression, obsessive compulsive disorder and panic disorder”.
So how exactly does Depeche Mode’s Martin Gore fit into this? Well, we’re not too sure to be honest. But nonetheless, Estavillo has reportedly subpoenaed Gore for contributing to his personal alienation, claiming that “since he himself has been known to be sad, lonely, and alienated, as can be seen in the songs he writes.”
Topping the whole maddening ice cream sundae off with a spectacularly weird cherry, Estavillo is calling on actress Winona Ryder to testify at his case, concluding that her appreciation for J.D. Salinger’s beloved Catcher In the Rye makes Ryder a relevant witness “to how alienation in the book can tie to alienation in real live games such as World of Warcraft.”
ITM will follow Estavillo’s story (from a distance, mind you) to see just how Gore reacts to the lawsuit, but meanwhile check the video below for what’s still our favourite WoW freakout.
