Today the whole of Russia is in mourning as the first funerals are held for the victims of a tragic fire in a Perm nightclub over the weekend.
The Lame Horse club, now nothing more than ash, was situated in the city of Perm, home to about 1 million people and located about 1,400 km east of Russia’s capital, Moscow, in the Ural Mountain region.
The accident took place on Friday afternoon, as celebrations for the club’s 10th anniversary were underway. Regional Security Minister Igor Orlov explained to ITAR-TASS (Russia’s main news agency) that, as part of the festivities, a batch of fireworks were launched inside of the club, which quickly caught fire as one firework hit the plastic ceiling.
Most of the 112 deaths were caused by smoke inhalation and burns, but many were also crushed as the crowd panicked and rushed towards the club’s only exit. 134 people are injured from Friday’s fire, and 85 of those remain in critical condition in Moscow, St. Petersburg and Chelyabinsk hospitals.
Timur Parfiryev, a 26 year old bartender at the Lame Horse, was among the first to be laid to rest in Perm on Sunday, as Russia’s Emergency Situations Minister Sergei Shoigu issued a ban against the use of fireworks in Russia’s public entertainment venues.
Investigations are underway, and the club’s owner, the co-owner and manager, as well as the art director and a private operator in responsible for the fireworks have already been arrested as suspects in the tragedy.
