Supremely popular trance outfit Above & Beyond have made it clear that they’re keen to live up to the lofty ideals of their name, having asked Richard Branson if they can DJ on the first ever Virgin Galactic flights into space.
NME reports that Above & Beyond made the offer to Virgin Galactic after headlining an event in the Mojave Desert this week. The party was held to launch SpaceShipTwo, a plane in Virgin Galactic’s fleet. “We’re big fans of all things space-related and so in terms of dream gigs, this is up there alongside our performance in Rio to one million people,” said Jono Grant of the trancing trio. “We’re now hoping to persuade Richard [Branson] to let us DJ on the first Virgin Galactic passenger flight into space.”
Although Virgin Galactic have been taking bookings for their space flights, there’s still no announcement of when they’ll launch, although rumours persist that test flights are due to start sometime in 2010. If Above & Beyond get the gig they might find themselves sharing a space capsule with Moby, Dave Navarro of Jane’s Addiction and Noel Gallagher of Oasis, who are all reported to have booked seats on Virgin Galactic’s maiden voyage.
One of the most anticipated acts of the 2010 Future Music Festival tour, this isn’t the first time Jono, Paavo and Tony have reached for the stars. A competition held earlier this year gave one lucky A&B fan a spot on their very own hot air balloon, where they performed a special acoustic broadcast for Pete Tong’s BBC radio show.
