Love him or hate him, there’s no denying 2009 was a massive year for French house fiend David Guetta, with his album One Love and accompanying swathe of catchier-than-an-STI singles dominating radio, clubs and the charts. Since its release in August it has topped the charts in 17 countries worldwide. No mean feat for a ‘dance act’.
Not to be outdone, 2009 was also the year Guetta attained his highest ever DJ Mag Top 100 ranking, moving up two places to feature at #3 behind Dutch trance titans Armin van Buuren and Tiesto. Preparing to head down under for the Future Music Festival in a few months time, in an interesting turn of events Guetta’s massive 2009 won him praise from the very artists who ranked ahead of him.
In an interview with Canadian newspaper the National Post published in late December, Guetta explained the unlikely scenario. “You know what’s funny? Both Armin and Tiesto called me to say, ‘This year, you’re the No. 1.’ Both of them. That was really nice of them – but they were wrong.” Now, who said DJs weren’t a modest bunch?
