What’s that old saying? “Another day, another celebrity death rumour”? Okay, bad joke, but with the wave upon wave of death hoaxes appearing online everyday, ranging from the ridiculous – William Hung, anybody? – to the ones we wouldn’t really mind being real – Paris Hilton –, there’s definitely some truth to that line. And today is no different, with gullible online rubes getting sucked into a fresh hoax, this one proclaiming that iconic Chicago house spinner, DJ Funk, is dead.
The initial word of DJ Funk’s (who’s better known as Charles Chambers away from the wheels of steel) demise began to spread early this morning on Twitter (of course), beginning with a dubious tweet from the user ovx stating simply “RIP DJ FUNK”. Remember we’re talking about the internet here, so naturally this casual post purporting the DJ’s death was picked up and taken as gospel by droves of reactionary users, all eulogizing the allegedly fallen DJ in 140 characters or less.
After a flurry of concerned Tweets from all corners of club going world, including disgruntled back and forths from the likes of Teki Latex of the Institubes stable and beloved Berlin tech squad Modeselektor, it would seem as though reason is at last winning out, with people like Johnny Love and Surkin debunking the rumour as a not-so-elaborate hoax, with the former tweeting “I’m pretty sure the DJ Funk is dead shit is a joke, all you people who werent around in the rave days in chicago wouldnt remember it”.
Now if we could back to the real news at hand, we hear that Luke Steele and Kanye West have been killed in a gruesome gondola accident…
