Responsible for resuscitating the long dead grooves of disco music and getting hipsters to dance with their blend of funk and punk, the crew at DFA Records have enjoyed a lengthy stay in the sun over the last decade. But there’s change a-foot for the flagship New York imprint, with news appearing over the weekend that one of the label’s driving forces Tim Goldsowrthy had severed ties with DFA Records, packing his bags for the UK without even a word to his DFA colleagues.
Speaking to Pitchfork about Goldsworthy’s disappearing act, DFA label manager Jonathan Galkin explained that “Tim Goldsworthy moved away to somewhere in the United Kingdom, without informing anyone here at DFA. We have had no word from him since he left the United States. So we moved on with our lives and our business. Simple as that.” Whilst Goldsworthy remains involved in DFA from a legal standpoint, Galkin confirmed that he would no longer be producing with partner James Murphy under the label’s titular production outfit, DFA. “He most definitely took a piece of us when he left, but we wish him the best with whatever he gets up to next.”
Offering up his side of the story, Goldsworthy responded by saying that he had in fact “not left” the label and would be willing to work on new project should circumstances be appropriate. “If that was the case then, well, Murphy’s never there, cause he’s always touring or in the studio, so that would mean he left, I don’t know, nine years ago or something?”
Speaking of James Murphy, the LCD Soundsystem mastermind has been busying himself with a host of projects including a new LCD LP as well as the film score for upcoming Noah Baumbach feature Greenberg which sees Ben Stiller trade in Blue Steel for cardigans and a slacker-tude. When questioned about the soundtrack by Drowned In Sound Murphy explained that it “sounds NOTHING like LCD, really. It’s made to fit the movie, not be ‘my record’.” Cop the tracklist for Greenberg below – which does indeed feature a new LCD Soundsystem tune and other vignettes from Murphy – which is out in late March overseas.
