For those people brave/foolhardy enough to follow the exploits of inimitable electronic innovator Matthew Herbert, it’s been both a wildly entertaining and borderline disturbing ride to witness Herbert’s attempts to record a new album around the life cycle of a pig. Yes, a pig. What’s more, Herbert’s album The Pig will feature only pig noises, and no traditional instrumentation – besides the odd flute made from hollowed-out pig bones, that is. Err, we’ll let Herbert explain it all.
“I will be there at its birth, during its life, present at its death and during the butchery process. Its body will then be given to chefs new and old, there will be a feast, it will all be recorded and then turned in to music.”
Well, now Herbert is one step closer to completing his vision, with news emerging overnight that the album’s protagonist pig made its way to the big trough in the sky after it and Herbert visited a local abattoir.
“For me the death was always a crucial part of the project,” Herbert wrote on his blog. “It was the part I was looking forward to the least, but the part I felt was most pertinent in my understanding of this life. I’ll be writing more about this process at a later date. In the next stage of this process, the pig will be butchered this afternoon.”
From the sounds of it, Herbert has cracked onto something that will either be the greatest album ever, or a something that will devolve into a modern Lord Of The Flies situation. Either way, we’re bloody excited to hear it! Now if you’ll excuse us, we’ve got a leg of ham to demolish.
