One of the dance music community’s most celebrated mix series, !K7’s beloved DJ-Kicks series is set to return in 2010 with more mix compilations, the first of which will be served up by none other than DFA Records knob-twiddler The Juan MacLean.

On board for mixing duties, Juan MacLean mastermind John MacLean (yeah, it is confusing) has put together a wonderfully diverse bag of tracks from the likes of DFA buddies Shit Robot and Still Going as well as Danny Howells and Adelaide’s own Sonny Foderra. As is customary with the DJ-Kicks series, there’s an original tune from The Juan MacLean, entitled Feels So Good, recorded with drummer Jerry Fuchs before his untimely death last year.

Whilst local fans would be well versed in The Juan MacLean’s live identity following the band’s summer tour, there is no questioning MacLean’s DJing chops, and the producer spoke at length about the effort and time he’s sunk into his mix.

“As a DJ, I’ve been wrestling with the idea: how much are you an artist, with your own aesthetic principles, and how much are you an entertainer? I’ve always found it interesting to grapple with those two ideas, rather than throw yourself in either direction. It’s easy to be self-indulgent and stay cool and make the proper moves. It’s also easy to just play hit after hit, which most people do,” he explained in a press release about the new compilation. “But to somehow wrestle with those two things and emerge with something that considers both, seems more interesting.”

We’re pretty excited for this one and we’ll be holding out for the April 27th release date. In the meantime, scope the full tracklisting below.

John Maclean, although an epic producer, cannot mix to save his life. His mixing at Field Day was probably the worst DJing I have ever heard (since Chromeo's FBi set anyway). Great tune choice but it's kind of ironic that he is being tagged as a DJ.
