Thousands of people are rallying behind Plastic People – one of London’s most celebrated clubs – following news that authorities want to have it shut down. Hackney Council and police are pursuing the closure on the grounds of “prevention of public nuisance and of crime and disorder”.
Police have singled out the 250-capacity underground den in Shoreditch after receiving noise complaints and identifying traces of cocaine in the toilets. The fate of the club is set to be decided at a council meeting on 31 March.
As expected, Plastic People’s many fans won’t be going down without a fight. A ‘KEEP PLASTIC PEOPLE ALIVE’ petition is steadily growing on Facebook, with several DJs including Ewan Pearson and Erol Alkan getting behind the effort.
Plastic People is renowned throughout the UK and Europe for its immersive sound-system, no-frills décor and enviable roster of nights. Its darkened dancefloor has hosted many incredible parties, among them dubstep breeding ground FWD>>, Ben Watt’s Buzzin’ Fly showcases and the disco and deep house session Warm.
