Are collaborative albums the next big thing for dance music? Quite possibly it would seem. This year we’ve already seen Italian lads Crookers pack out their debut album with a legion of guests, following on of course from that most sexiest of bitches David Guetta and his 2009 record One Love.
Get ready to add another name to the ever-growing list, with none other than Swedish House Mafia heavyweight Steve Angello telling inthemix that he’s been working on a debut artist album that’s going to be similar in style.
“I’ve been working on it for about six months now here in L.A., and I’ve been working on some big tracks for it,” he told ITM. ““I’m going to have some collaborations with very big artists on the album, and that’s coming together at the moment.”
Speaking about the album and it’s apparent collaborative flavour, Angello singled out the success of David Guetta on the back of One Love, saying that he “saw it coming with David Guetta”.
“I knew he was going to blow up big. I actually thought it would happen sooner than it did, but now it’s all happening and everybody is trying to do this. I wouldn’t call it pop, because it’s not, it’s dance music, but I guess it’s popular dance music. I think it’s great that we’re getting to work with these huge superstars.”
Aware of the backlash that’s developed for the grinning Frenchman, ITM asked Angello if he had any concerns about a similar reaction to his album’s commercial appeal.
“I see it happen every single day where fans get upset when an artist becomes commercial. They may be more popular but the music hasn’t changed at all,” he explained. “I had a big discussion about this last time I was in Australia with a techno DJ who I won’t name, and he said that I was so mainstream now. This guy sold 150,000 copies of his latest compilation and I sold 25,000 of my compilation, so if you think about it, doesn’t that make him more mainstream than me?”
As for the record itself, Angello says he has put his “own twist” on the style, emphasising that “it won’t be the usual thing where a pop artist just jumps on a club record, it’s going to be something different. I think I’m the only who has tried to take it in this direction. You’ll see, it’s going to be exciting.”
Whilst Angello wouldn’t reveal to ITM exactly who we would be seeing on his apparently star-stuffed album, he did tell us to expect some surprises with the record’s feature spots. Given his continued Twitter shout outs with fellow L.A. resident and credible pop mastermind RedOne and this week’s announcement that his WMC party in Miami would feature an appearance from indie flame bird Florence Welch of Florence & The Machine we’re cautiously optimistic about how this could turn out.
