Seemingly as keen as ever to raise her voice in dissension, Maya Arulpragasam (or M.I.A. as she’s known to lovers of weirded-out hip-hop hybrids) has come out swinging in a recent NME interview, this time taking aim at the inescapable pop-music monster that is Lady Gaga. Cat hiss!
As reported by NY Mag, M.I.A. had some particularly harsh words for Ms Gaga, the Sri-Lankan born rapper taking issue with the popstar’s soul-less commercial shilling (err, in so many words).
“There’s Lady Gaga — people say we’re similar, that we both mix all these things in the pot and spit them out differently, but she spits it out exactly the same!,” the clearly perturbed rapper began. “None of her music’s reflective of how weird she wants to be or thinks she is. She models herself on Grace Jones and Madonna, but the music sounds like 20-year-old Ibiza music, you know? She’s not progressive, but she’s a good mimic. She sounds more like me than I fucking do! That’s a talent and she’s got a great team behind her, but she’s the industry last’s stab at making itself important – saying, ‘You need our money behind you, the endorsements, the stadiums’…Lady Gaga plugs 15 things in her new video. Dude, she even plugs a burger!”
Interviewed by the British music sheet as a lead in to the next M.I.A. album due out later this year (she clearly doesn’t ‘get’ the whole retirement thing, does she?), M.I.A. couldn’t help but fire off a couple more barbs at Gaga, when asked about the importance of visuals on her music responding “it’s not like “Haus of Gaga”…Me blindfolded with naked men feeding me apples and shit.”
Who’s next on M.I.A.’s shit-list, we wonder? Kanye West? Madonna? A ‘techno’ loving Miley Cyrus? Please say yes to all…
