With a cloud of volcanic ash drifting across Europe from Iceland, this weekend is set to a fraught one for the world’s club promoters. Airports across the continent have been closed in what is being called the biggest air-travel shutdown since the 9/11 terrorist attacks. A volcano at the Eyjafjallajokull glacier near Reykjavík is responsible for the delays, having erupted on Wednesday for the second time in under a month.
Given the number of acts flying out of Europe on any given weekend, it’s safe to say gig cancellations will be widespread. It has certainly been a stressful few days for the organisers of California’s revered Coachella music festival, whose line-up for this weekend includes dance music superstars Tiesto, Deadmau5, Benny Benassi, Flying Lotus and many more. “Our headliners are fine,” Coachella founder Paul Tollet told the Wall Street Journal. “But there’s maybe a dozen bands in question.”
Happily for the festival-goers, Tiesto and Deadmau5 are already safely within US borders and en route to Coachella. As for other touring acts – such as Booka Shade, Sebastian Ingrosso, Dave Seaman and several more – the volcano has crashed the party.
ITM will keep you posted if the ash cloud stands in the way of any Australia-bound internationals this weekend!
