As ITM reported at the tail-end of last week, the eruption of an Icelandic volcano and subsequent spread of that volcanic ash across much of Europe turned the gig-going weekend into a disaster scene right of Dante’s Peak, with DJs and artists – including an Australia bound Agoria, boo hoo! – being grounded.
Yet while the likes of LCD Soundsystem, Crystal Castles and a swag of Coachella artists including Gary Numan, Delphic and Bernard Sumner’s post New Order collective Bad Lieutenant had their plans torn to pieces by the unpronounceable Eyjafjallajokull volcano, one act to fight the elements and win was Britain’s Chemical Brothers.
As reported by Gigwise, the legendary UK duo braved the spread of mother nature’s fiery smoker’s cough and fulfilled their tour commitments in Milan over the weekend by chartering a 10-seater private plane from UK company Hangar8, which charges a tidy £3000 an hour for trips.
According to the same news piece, the number of chartered planes has skyrocketed (good choice of words, that) since the mass cancellation of commercial flights, with Hangar8 chief Tom Gillespie saying the company has “managed to get more than 100 people around over the past couple of days, while commercial flights have been grounded. We wouldn’t fly if it wasn’t safe but it is.”
We only hope the ‘Chems show that same sort of enthusiasm and commitment to getting their butts down to Australia to tour their new Further LP sooner rather than later!
