Let’s set the (fictional) scene for you: It’s October 2009, Ice Cube has just wrapped shooting on another hammy family comedy and read the news that fellow rap icons Run-DMC are turning their storied career into a Broadway musical. “Fuck that!” Ice thinks whilst lighting a cigar with a $100 bill. He calls up his agent and demands that N.W.A.’s history gets the silver screen treatment or else he’ll make xXx: The Nexter Level. And so here we are, the wheels are indeed in motion to transform N.W.A’s colourful (to say the least) history into Hollywood biopic Oscar bait.
As reported by LA Weekly the story of iconic rap squad of Eazy-E, Dr. Dre, MC Ren, DJ Yella and Ice Cube is currently being prepped for a big screen biopic currently dubbed Straight Outta Compton after the group’s seminal 1988 album of the same name.
Scripted by Andrea Berloff whose most recent work was the screenplay for Oliver Stone’s World Trade Centre, Straight Outta Compton is said to follow the hip-hop legends as they rise up through the streets of South Central Los Angeles, to “the success of their initial albums and on to their eventual breakup, which was not a friendly parting.”
Whilst full details about plot, direction and casting are sketchy at this point, this will undoubtedly be big with all of the elements for a critical and commercial powerhouse such as a built-in soundtrack, drugs, overbearing authorities, tense race relations and death by AIDS.
