It’s been a rough trot for international dance festivals of late, culminating in the tragedy over the weekend at Germany’s Love Parade. Fortunately for music lovers though, the dance community is persevering and today we’ve got the announcement that beloved Barcelona festival, Sonar, will be branching out to Chicago this September.
The Sonar Chicago announcement comes after two apparently successful exportations of the Spanish festival to the US territories of Washington and New York last year, with Sonar organisers aiming to take everything great about Sonar and set it down in the windy city.
“The objective is to take the philosophy of the Barcelona festival to the North American city, with all the features that have made Sónar an international touchstone: with an ambitious and high quality line-up featuring plenty of electronic experimentation and its derivations and unusual venues of the highest calibre, in this case the Jay Pritzker Pavilion – designed by Frank Ghery – in the popular Millennium Park (the 9th of September) and the famous Chicago Cultural Center (the 10th and 11th of September).”
This year’s Barcelona festival featured plenty of big dance acts including Hot Chip, Plastikman and Matthew Herbert, the Chicago festival also looks the business with a diverse cast of artists already revealed on the lineup such as Martyn, The Slew, Nosaj Thing and experimental acts like Lesley Flanigan and Australian ex-pat Ben Frost. Tasty!
