The dance community was in a state of shock back in July when the famous German festival Love Parade fell apart and over the course of one disastrous afternoon 21 people were killed and many more injured as over-swelling crowd numbers caused a stampede in a tunnel entrance to the festival’s Duisberg site. Amongst the out-pouring of grief and sympathy for those effected by the disaster questions were raised as to exactly how Love Parade turned so ugly so quickly, and nearly two months on from the tragedy we may at last be getting some answers.
In the aftermath of Love Parade 2010 the organisers behind the now-closed festival have launched a new website aimed at providing some transparency into the horrific events of July, dissecting statements and camera footage from the day to determine and spotlight what went wrong.
“We, the Loveparade team, are extremely shocked that this terrible tragedy happened at the 2010 event,” a statement on the website read. “The entire Loveparade team would like to extend their deeply felt condolences to the victims’ families and friends. We know that we cannot lessen their grief. Just like the victims’ families, the participants and the general public, we, too, must understand what happened on 24 July 2010. This website is an expression of the fact that we accept this responsibility.”
The first piece of information to emerge from the festival’s post-mortem is a video explaining and detailing the turn of events on the day. As the website’s player is not embed-friendly, we’ve hosted a copy of it on the ITM player below. It’s a pretty chilling few minutes and one can’t help but feel upset that it went so badly wrong. Watch it below.
In other Love Parade news, the DJs United track that was being worked on by Armin van Buuren, Paul Van Dyk and Paul Oakenfold in tribute to the fallen punters of the festival has now made its way onto the internet. Check it out in the clip here.
