DJ Download offer their own ‘Top 100 DJs’

It was earlier this week that ITM reported on the leaking of DJ Mag’s annual Top 100 DJs poll with Armin van Buuren reigning supreme in the top spot of a list largely panned by ITM readers. Well now the recently troubled digital retailer DJ Download have seen DJ Mag’s poll and raised them with their own list of the 100 best DJs currently spinning.

Likely prepared as the antithesis to the DJ Mag chart, DJ Download’s top 100 is sure to please the chin-strokers among us with high rankings for renowned favourites like Laurent Garnier, Erol Alkan, Paul Woolford and not a mention of David Guetta in sight. The #1 crown goes to a deserving James Zabiela to boot.

However, and this is a big glaring ‘however’, it’s difficult to trust the authority of DJ Download’s list as it appears to have been put together by just two people from DJ Download who put themselves – ¿The Nobody Random Soundsystem? – in at the #8 spot ahead of some amateur called Jeff Mills. Smooth moves, ex-lax.

Frankly, I think a list put together by two industry professionals is much more reliable than a popularist voting system. Most of the big guys win them because they send out free tracks and mixes to 100,000 people in exchange for voting. Good for the website stats, doesn't really paint a real picture. This is a much better list!

That list seems pretty on-the-ball as a list of the most well-known but actually skilled DJs in the world at the moment. There's a few in there I was like "eh?" but it's a shitload better than the DJ Mag one. I'd say the only way you're really gonna get any sort of "definitive" (if that's even possible) list is to ask DJs to vote for their peers.

These lists are all pretty stupid, its like asking who is the best singer in the world. What qualifies JZ as being number one? If its his turntableism (which is pretty cool), then im sure there's quite a few hip-hop DJ's who could challenge him on that side of things. If its his tune selection, then Laurent Garnier and Sven Vath beat him hands down. If it's how consistent he is or how many rave reviews his sets receive then Villalobos wins. The only "Top 100" list that ever seems to have any credibility is the Resident Advisor one.
