The Prodigy’s 1997 single Smack My Bitch Up has been voted the most controversial song of all time in a new poll.

The online poll of 1757 respondents was conducted by the Performing Right Society (PRS) the organisation that collects and pays royalties to songwriters.

The single, which was banned by the BBC and attracted criticism from feminist groups, topped the list ahead of other notable tracks including the Sex Pistols’ God Save The Queen and Eminem’s spousal abuse anthem Kim.

Announcing the list PRS chairman Ellis Rich noted that “many of these songs have achieved iconic status because of the controversy or because the record was banned”.

Check out the top 10 below – with no mention of N.W.A oddly enough – and relive the chaos of the Smack My Bitch Up clip.
