Iconic hip hop beatsmith DJ Premier is reportedly at work on a new album under the Gang Starr moniker which he shared with innovative MC Keith “Guru” Elam. You might remember that Guru passed away earlier this year after a traumatic battle with cancer, so it’s understandable to wonder just how Premier is going to pull off a posthumous release.
Well, according to FACT who cite a recent piece in XXL, Premier’s been working with international producers that have been providing the Brooklyn producer with reels of recently recorded but unreleased Premier raps.
“There are guys in Europe who say that they have seven or eight [verses],” Premier told XXL. “It’s songs he did with them and they never finished it and they said I can have them. They reached out and were like, ‘As long as you’re doing it. You can have the vocals’. They are all brand new, from like a year and a half ago. I listened to them and I’ll make them shits sound like we were together. Well, we will be together because spiritually, he’s with me for the rest of my life.”
Premier went on to explain that the Gang Starr album that ultimately results from his treasure trove explorations will be bolstered by the release of a DVD chronicling the rap group’s rise to prominence.
“I’m putting together a Gang Starr DVD because I’ve been filming since 1989,” Premier said. “I did all the filming until 1993. Then I started bringing guys with me. I have hundreds and hundreds of tapes of me and Guru arguing in the airport. Him and Shug fighting. Guru tried fighting everyone. Now, you look at it and it’s like, ‘Damn, I miss that’.”
