Insomniac Events, the powerhouse behind California’s Electric Daisy Carnival and the Nocturnal Festival, has raised the ire of some of its followers by prohibiting ‘LED Lights or Light Toys’ from its upcoming Beyond Wonderland event.
Having come under media scrutiny last year when more than 200 people were injured at the 2010 edition of Electric Daisy, Insomniac is working hard to change the mainstream perception of its events. Eradicating ‘rave’ paraphernalia like ‘Light Toys’ and ‘Light Gloves’ appears to be part of that plan. Apparently too many punters are sitting on the dancefloor zoning out to the pretty lights, which doesn’t look good in newspaper reports.
When (predictably enough) angry LED-lovers took to message-boards to vent against Insomniac, the company laid out its reasons in a letter to its ‘loyal fans’. Here’s an abridged version.
“We have spent considerable time and efforts in Insomniac meetings discussing the pros and cons of attendees giving LED light shows at Insomniac events. Although there are many who use these lights as an art-form, the image that it creates when groups of music fans are sitting or lying on the floor gazing at the designs reflects poorly and sends a false message of what the electronic dance music scene is about.
“This image jeopardises our ability to produce events, which we love and plan on doing for decades to come. In addition, local fire marshals have voiced their concerns about attendees sitting on the dance floor and will no longer tolerate the fire hazard that it creates. In conclusion, LED lights and light gloves will no longer be allowed into Insomniac events until further notice.”
Luckily, the Beyond Wonderland line-up would make lying on the ground a waste of precious time. The Madhatters Castle main-stage is so far reserved for trance heavies like Infected Mushroom, Christopher Lawrence and Cosmic Gate, while a techno arena presents Richie Hawtin, Marco Carola, M.A.N.D.Y. and Loco Dice.
