The good, the bad and the WTF of this year’s IDMA results

While WMC’s annual awards ceremony has lost some its lustre since the messy separation with longtime associate event Ultra Music Festival, the 2011 International Dance Music Awards made up for its lack of EDM star power with its sheer volume of awards handed out. No joke, there were 56 gongs given out at the Thursday night (our Friday) party covering all the corners of the dance music spectrum.

Following the tradition established in previous years, the results for the 26th annual awards ought to be taken with a yard glass of salt with honours going out to obvious choices like Deadmau5, David Guetta and Armin van Buuren (the latter of whom picked up six awards) as well as club-pop superstars like Lady Gaga and Rihanna.

On a different note it was a nice surprise to see some Aussie talent recognised with The Temper Trap nabbing Best Alternative/Rock Dance Track for Sweet Disposition (so what if it’s three years old?) and We No Speak Americano from DCUP & Yolanda Be Cool picked up Best Latin/Reggaeton Track.

Also surprising were the dual gongs for Duck Sauce’s Barbra Streisand and Swedish House Mafia’s One, with both tracks managing to take out multiple categories including Best House/Garage Track and Best Underground Dance Track for Barbra Streisand while One was apparently the best of the Electro/Tech House and Progressive fields. Go figure.

And if you were hoping for inthemix to take Best Dance Music Website then let us blow a sad trombone for you as Beatportal took the crown this year. (*Shakes fist*)
