Dance fans were troubled at the news earlier in the month that long-standing French label Institubes was closing its doors after eight years on top of the electro scene, citing dwindling profits and the continually changing landscape of the recording industry. Out of the ashes of Institubes however comes Marble, the new imprint headed by Institubes regulars Bobmo, Para One and upcoming Creamfields visitor Surkin.

Talking to inthemix recently about his Creamfields plans and his year ahead, Surkin took the time to plot out the gameplan behind Marble, explaining that the label would function as a ‘playground’ of sorts for artists to go wild on.

“We’re all really excited about doing the label,” Surkin buzzed from his and Bobmo’s High Powered Boys studio in Paris. “It’s not just our records, we will be releasing stuff from other artists like Canblaster, Myd, Das Glow. It’s going to be a very busy schedule with Marble; we’ve already got about 10 releases lined up so we hope to be putting out new releases every two or three weeks for about the next six months.”

Speaking about the operations of Marble with his fellow artists, Surkin was confident that the trio of producers had learned a few lessons having watched Institubes implode as it did.

“I think the main problem with Institubes was that it was a label that started when vinyl sales were still strong and there was still a record business,” he explained. “Selling maybe 10,000 vinyls was a possibility if you had a big track and then you would have enough money to run the label for a year. That’s not the case anymore. With Marble we know that we’re not going to make any money, it is more just a platform for us. There is no big office like Institubes had, it’s just us in our studios. It’s not traditional.”
