With Tiesto previously putting a moratorium on glow sticks at his shows, we now have word on the latest scourge to distract artists in the live arena; camera phones!

Yep, we’ve all been bothered or bothered others at a gig by standing still in the middle of the room to film or photograph what’s going on onstage in stunning two megapixel quality – likely never to view the footage again, too. But if US instrumental hip hop meets electronic via rock explorers Ratatat had their way then those pesky camera phones would be banned from live shows.

Though they wowed us all on their recent Australian tour with the Big Day Out festival over summer, Ratatat have opened up about their disdain for seeing illuminated mobiles in the crowd and supporting a kibosh on camera phones at their gigs as they are “distracting for people in the audience, and for us on stage too.”

Speaking about his anti-phone feelings to The Edmonton Sun, one half of Ratatat Evan Mast explained that the advancing technology detracted from the overall live experience of seeing a live show.

“I understand the sentiment,” Mast offered. “It’s cool that people want to take a piece of the show home with them or show it to their friends or whatever. But I kind of feel like it would be more fun if they just enjoyed the show. If everyone’s kind of doing this thing where they’re thinking about how they’re going to enjoy their experience later or show people later or something. I would rather them not use their cellphones, even if it’s for talking or texting.”

We can definitely see the point of Ratatat’s argument and as distracting as it can be in the crowd, imagine all those lights in your face while onstage. At the same time though, without kids recording shows on their camera phones we would never have this pearl of footage…
